Dr. Stephanie Protze obtained her BSc in the Molecular Biotechnology program at the Dresden University of Technology in Germany in 2007. She then joined the International Max Planck Research School in the laboratory of Drs. Ursula Ravens and Elly Tanaka, graduating with a PhD in Cell Biology and Biomedicine from the University of Dresden in 2012. As a postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Protze moved to Toronto, Canada to train in the laboratory of Dr. Gordon Keller at the McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine at the University Health Network. In 2018, Dr. Protze joined the newly founded McEwen Stem Cell Institute at the University Health Network as a Scientist to start her own independent research group. In addition, she is holding an appointment as Assistant Professor at the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto.

When Dr. Protze is not doing science she likes to put her running shoes on or channel her inner yogi.

Maggie joined the Protze Lab as a lab technician & manager in 2021. She is responsible for the organization, ordering, and management of the lab and performs tissue culture to assist in research projects. Maggie's favourite pastimes include drawing, crafts, and gaming.

Brandon obtained a BSc in Molecular Genetics & Microbiology from the University of Toronto in 2021. As an undergraduate, Brandon trained in Dr. Aaron Reinke’s lab, where he studied host-pathogen interactions and pathogen evolution. Brandon is broadly interested in developing new bioengineering strategies and platforms for cell and gene therapy. This interest led him to the Protze lab, where he joined as a PhD student in 2022 to work on the ischemia-resistance project. In his spare time, Brandon enjoys baking, binge-watching TV shows and movies, weightlifting and running, as well as playing guitar and singing - all things he does rather poorly.

Matthew is a PhD student in the Protze lab, leading the gastruloid model project. Before joining the Protze Lab, he worked on epigenetics and cell mechanobiology during his BSc at McGill University. His research interests lie heavily in developmental biology and stem cell biology. Matthew works as an entire circus during his free time away from lab.
